Preparing for the arrival of your baby can feel both thrilling and overwhelming. As the big day approaches, there are countless checklists and recommendations, but some things will be more significant and have a more lasting impact. The goal should be a positive pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. After caring for and supporting more than 10,000 families since 2010 as the founder of Chicago Family Doulas and Birth and Baby University, these are the top things to do to help set the foundation for a smoother, more supported journey into parenthood—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

1. Hire a Doula

Undoubtedly, hiring a doula is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your birth and postpartum experiences. First and foremost, doulas offer continuous physical, emotional, and educational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Moreover, studies consistently show that doula support leads to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and greater satisfaction with the birth experience. Additionally, postpartum support leads to having a more enjoyable and manageable 4th trimester. It’s important to note that a doula will NEVER replace your partner or your provider—rather, they enhance your team and consequently help you feel confident, heard, and supported every step of the way.

2. Take Comprehensive Childbirth & Baby Classes

Without a doubt, knowledge is power. Specifically, high-quality childbirth and baby classes will equip you with essential tools, information, and confidence to help you navigate labor, postpartum, and baby! Therefore, look for evidence-based, interactive lessons on comfort measures, medical options, informed decision-making, newborn care, nursing, and usable information. As a result, a great class helps you better understand your body, baby, and choices, thus giving you the confidence to advocate for the birth you want. Consequently, we focus on all these topics in our Birth & Baby University classes.

3. Find a Supportive Community

Parenting is not meant to be done alone. Building a circle of support—whether through a pregnancy group, online forum, prenatal yoga class, or postpartum support group—can make a difference. Connecting with others navigating the same stage of life creates a sense of belonging, helps normalize your feelings, and gives you a place to ask questions, share stories, and feel seen.

4. Strengthen Your Relationship With Your Partner

Your partnership is the foundation of your growing family. Before the baby arrives, take time to strengthen communication, align on expectations, and talk openly about roles, responsibilities, and goals for birth and early parenting. Attending classes together, going on date nights, or even scheduling sessions with a perinatal counselor can help you prepare as a team. The stronger your connection, the more resilient you’ll feel as you navigate the transition to parenthood together.

5. Choose a Provider Who Aligns With Your Values

Not all OBs, midwives, or hospitals are the same. The provider you choose will significantly shape your pregnancy and birth experience. Ask questions, research their approach to birth, and trust your gut. Do they listen to your concerns? Are they respectful of your preferences? Do they support the kind of birth you envision—whether that’s unmedicated, epidural-assisted, or a planned cesarean? The right provider will make you feel safe, supported, and empowered in your care.

Every pregnancy is different, but thoughtful preparation can create a more peaceful and empowered start to your parenting journey. Surround yourself with people who support your vision, educate yourself, and give yourself space to grow into this new role. You’ve got this, and you’re not alone.
